Towing Rescue
There’s a saying: “Every journey carries its risks.” Accidents, by nature, come when least expected.
Although a sea kayak can handle rough seas, the possibility of capsizing is always there. We can’t count on every outing being calm, so we must always be ready with rescue skills.
Out at sea, when a teammate capsizes and comes out of their kayak, they usually can’t continue paddling. Tense nerves and lost balance mean that if they try to paddle on their own, there’s a high chance they’ll flip again. At that moment, the priority is finding a way to bring them to safe place—and towing rescue is one of the most effective techniques.
Just a few days ago in Penghu, I was teaching fellow paddlers how to perform different rescues. Once you know how to handle these situations, you gain the confidence to take on even bigger conditions. Penghu is a year-round paddling paradise, and this winter, we’re heading out to chase the big waves
