Do you want to maintain elegant and precise kayak control in 15-knot winds and 2-ft swell?
Taught personally by Coach Chungshi (ACA Level 4 Instructor / Gearlab Designer), this program breaks down the comprehensive ACA Level 3 Sea Kayak curriculum into four independent workshops.
You may enroll flexibly based on your progression, or complete all four modules to qualify for ACA Level 3 certification.
Four Core Workshops (Available individually)
Module A | Advanced Strokes & Precision Control
(L3 Strokes, Maneuvers, Edge & Brace)
Core Objective:
Refine foundational skills through baseline evaluation and build precise boat control and dynamic balance in advanced conditions.
Baseline Evaluation: Diagnose paddling fundamentals and power application
Advanced Strokes (L3): Optimize stroke power chain for efficiency and endurance
Boat Control (Maneuvers): Integrate edging and bracing for stability in dynamic environments
Precision Turning: Bow rudder, stern rudder, and low/high brace turns with edge control
Fine Positioning: Moving side slip and sculling draw
Value: Transform your kayak into a seamless extension of your body
Module B | Safety & Response: Rescue and Management
(L3 Rescues, Towing & Group Safety)
Core Objective:
Build confidence in real sea conditions and evolve into a capable rescue leader.
Advanced Assisted Rescues: T-rescue, scoop rescue, and hand-of-god rescue in rough conditions
Self-Rescue Skills: Cowboy scramble, paddle float re-entry, and re-entry roll
Towing Systems: Contact tow and tow belt deployment and application
Group Management: Rescue prioritization and communication under pressure
Value: Gain the ability to protect yourself and your team in L3 conditions
Module C | Practical Navigation: Planning & Leadership
(Navigation, Risk Management & Leadership)
Core Objective:
Learn to read the ocean and develop the ability to plan, lead, and assess risks in point-to-point journeys.
Core Techniques:
Practical navigation (range/transit navigation, compass work)
Adjusting for leeway and ferry angle
Trip Planning: Tides, weather interpretation, and route planning
Leadership Rotation: Practice leading formations and managing risk in real time
Safety Knowledge: Rules of the road, hypothermia prevention, emergency evacuation planning
Value: Become capable of independently planning and leading safe sea kayak journeys
Module D | Dynamic Environments: Surf Zone & Rock Gardens
(Surf Zone or Rock Garden Environment)
Core Focus:
Apply all learned skills in the most dynamic and rewarding sea environments.
Surf Zone Skills: Reading wave sets and executing surf launch & landing
Surf & Side Control: Broach control and side surf bracing
Rock Garden Navigation: Swell timing, approach, and retreat techniques
Dynamic Risk Awareness: Identifying hazards, escape routes, and safe exit strategies
Value: Transform technical skills into instinctive reactions in dynamic conditions
🏅 ACA Level 3 Certification Pathway
This program follows the standards of the American Canoe Association (ACA):
Flexible Learning: Modules can be taken in any order (recommended to start with Module A)
